Versilia is mostly renowned as a summer holiday destination, because of its over twelve miles of equipped sandy beaches and the many facilities, bars and restaurants spreading in the towns on the coast, such as Pietrasanta, Forte dei Marmi, Seravezza, Stazzema, Camaiore, Torre del Lago and Viareggio, with liberty-style palazzos, the elegant cafes and the Carnival feast, renowned around the world. But Versilia means also history, poets and artists, breathtaking landscapes, undamaged nature; here traditions survive in the archaeological and architectonical witnesses of an ancient past. Among the most interesting areas of Versilia there is the Valley of Camaiore, rich in woods and grottos, with the prehistoric findings of the Grotta dell’Onda; in Massaciuccoli can be admired the monumental ruins of the Venueli’s old Roman Villa (I century a.C.).
