The eternal city is worldwide renowned for its millenarian history and the juxtaposition of three thousand years of history, which make of its old town an Unesco World Heritage.
Rome hosts the Vatican City and some hundreds of catholic churches, among which the most prominent are the four patriarchal churches: San Giovanni in Laterano (the city’s cathedral), San Pietro in Vaticano, San Paolo fuori le mura and Santa Maria Maggiore. The four basilicas are part of the so-called “circle of the seven churches” which traditionally the pilgrims coming in Rome had to cover by foot within a single day. The other three churches are San Lorenzo fuori le mura, Santa Croce in Gerusalemme and San Sebastiano fuori le mura. The urban net is full of Villas, public parks and protected areas: Rome is the Europe’s main city with the highest number of green hectares. The most notorious green part is represented by the high number of villas and gardens of ancient manors, such as Colle Oppio, a park in front of the Coliseum in which is the Domus Aurea; Villa Ada Savoia, along the Via Salaria, the second largest villa of the city, once residence and hunting house of the Savoia family; Villa Borghese, a great central park of which the Pincio with Villa Medici are part. Inside it are hosted also the Renaissance and Baroque art collection of the galleria Borghese, the Museo Canonica, the Museo Bilotti, the Bioparco and Villa Doria-Pamphili, the largest city park, from the Vatican City to the Grande Raccordo Anulare motorway, along the via Aurelia.
In every corner of the city rise architectonical treasures of incomparable beauty: the Coliseum, built on 72 a. C. Under the reign of Vespasian; the Fori Imperiali, political heart of the Roman Empire; the Pantheon and the wonderful Piazza Navona; the Trevi fountain and Piazza di Spagna, the suggestive Lungotevere which culminates in Castel Sant’Angelo.
