A squared urban plan of roman origins characterizes Pavia; by the crossing of the two main town streets arise the area of the old forum. To admire here are many architectonical works, first of all the famed Certosa, a mausoleum-chapel built under Galeazzo Visconti in 1396; to the façade have been working the most prominent sculptors of those times. Francesco Petrarca lived in the Visconteo Castle (XIV century). Architects such as Bramante and Leonardo da Vinci contributed in the making of the Cathedral, which houses the Christ Crown´s Thorns, carried in a summer religious procession. Many renaissance and baroque palaces have place in the town. The Belcredi tower offers an impressive view over the town.
Noteworthy in the province is the Visconte castle in Voghera, whose fortress is of the year 1330. During the restoration works in recent years important frescoes have been discovered, the most interesting of those are the muses ascribed to Bramantino. The magnificent Piazza Ducale in Vigevano is dominated by the impressive concave façade of the Cathedral; to visit in this town are also the castle and the Mulino di Morra Bassa, housing Leonardo’s machines.
Pavia is a main centre for cooking arts in southern Lombardy, thanks to typical products coming from particular old traditions, workings tied up with singular production places such as the Oltrepò hills with the renowned wines and the rice fields of the Lomellina. Among the cheese sorts we remember Gorgonzola, Quartirolo, Taleggio and Formaggio di Menconico, the last one made out from cow’s and sheep’s milk and matured 20-40 days long.
Who means fully to enjoy the relaxing landscapes of the planes and the pleasures of food, that should have also a stay in Salice Terme, in order to take advantage of the healing properties of the thermal sources around Pavia.
