The Monferrato is situated between the provinces of Asti and Alessandria and extends southerly until the feet of the Liguria Apennines on the boundary between the Province of Genova and the Province of Savona. At half X century the Monferrato started undergoing to changes and to be shaped by the mans hand: the woods were substituted by market gardens, vineyards, corn, fruit trees: pears, apples and hazelnuts. The Monferrato hills started producing vintage wines (even though the vine had already been introduced by the Romans). At now Monferrato is one of the most important vine regions of the world, particularly about red and sparkling wine. The most notorious red wines are Barbera dŽAsti, Barbera del Monferrato, Dolcetto dŽAcqui, Dolcetto dŽOvada, Grignolino dŽAsti, Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese, Rubino di Cantavenna, Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato. Among sparkling wines we remember Brachetto dAsti and Moscato dAsti. Casale Monferrato is the main town of this land : the old town is full of Baroque, Romanesque and Renaissance monuments, churches and historic palaces ; the cathedral of St. Evasio is the oldest monument of the town and one of the most relevant Romanesque-Lombard cathedrals of Piedmont. Other monuments to be visited: the Torre Civica, the municipal Palace and the ex monastery of the Sacred Cross. To be seen is the Sacred Mount of Crea, situated on one of the highest hills of Monferrato, surrounded by a wide natural park in which the landscape elements melt perfectly with the historical-architectonical ones. After Turin and together with Vercelli, Asti is one of the most important art towns of Piedmont, particularly for its monuments of the low middle age: many towers, house-fortresses, churches, domus and palaces. In this town was born Vittorio Alfieri, one of the most influent tragic poets of the XVIII century.
