A region with a magical atmosphere that has inspired poets such as Leopardi and travelers such as Stendhal and Goethe, thanks to its softly rolling hills dotted with old towns and its craggy inland Apennine mountain range where you can discover the magnificent Frasassi Caves, amongst the most spectacular in Europe. 180 km of coastline, 26 seaside resorts facing crystal clear waters. The landscapes overlooking the sea to the north offer us the spacious beaches of Gabicce Mare, Pesaro, Fano and Marotta. These make room for Monte Conero, a protected area lying to the south of Ancona with its spectacular, jagged rock faces, the magnificent roadsteads that are found in proximity to Numana and Portonovo, and Stirolo, known for its white pebbly beaches. Ancona, rich in monuments and the most important port in the region, is located in the middle of the Riviera. Its beaches include places such as Grottammare, San Benedetto del Tronto and Porto D’Ascoli. The historic and artistic heritage of the region is of priceless value. The area abounds in castles, abbeys, churches , squares, palaces, villas and monuments. Urbino is the queen of the art cities. In fact, it is said that each stone is a monument. Than there is Pesaro, a Roman city, and numerous small centres, jewels of art and architecture such as Recanati.
Many cultural events take place in Marche. In Pesaro, home to the famous composer Gioacchino Rossini, the Rossiniana Opera Festival is held. In Macerata, opera is staged at the Sferisterio Arena, against a magnificent scenic backdrop. The Quintana in Ascoli Piceno is a traditional celebration with historic costumes, typical decorations and magnificent flag throwers.
The region also boasts important wellbeing centers and spas. There are also a number of protected areas including the Monti Sibillini, Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Parks.
Amongst the typical dishes of Marche there are the famed stuffed, fried and breaded Ascolana olives, the ciaùsculu of Macerata, coppa and misticanza, a mixed salad of wild herbs, and the brodetto, an excellent fish soup.
