Langhe is an historical land of Piedmont situated between the provinces of Cuneo and Savona, constituted of an extended hilly group formed by the rivers Tanaro, Belbo, Bormida di Millesimo and Bormida di Spigno. A travel through the Langhe means visiting an enchanted place: castles and towns lying on the hills, facing the west Alps and, on the south side, the sea. The vineyards are the biggest part of the landscape: as from the old times people grew precious grapes in this dry steep land. The main town is Alba, celebrated for its truffles, the homonym dessert (“tartufo”) and hazelnuts. This town offers many interesting buildings such as the Cento Torri – born as defensive walls – and the gothic cathedral. Not to miss: the town of Cherasco, situated on an upland, with an elegant characteristic old town, surrounded by the remains of the old star-shaped walls. From Cherasco it is possible to go down towards Sorano and Gallo d’Alba, visiting the unmistakable castle of Grinzane Cavour, a XIII century manor, perfectly saved, which in XIX century hosted Camillo Benso, Cont of Cavour. The religious witnesses of the Langhe are significant: sanctuaries, churches, chapels and above all the Sacri Monti, the most typical and expressive signs of the ancient folk devotion: they consist in little chapels built on hill summits in order to celebrate life, death, the passion and resurrection of the Christ; they lately became places of veneration of the Virgin and of the Saints, and preserve still today the genuine spirituality of old times.
