The capital of Italy between 1864 and 1870 has been during the Middle Age and the Renaissance among the cities which mostly left a mark on the history of Europe. Florence is a treasure-trove of masterpieces, streets and elegant piazzas situated around Piazza della Signoria, the centre of secular life in the days of the Medici, with the impressive arches of the Loggia and the Palazzo Comunale which dominates the area. Flanking it, we find the 16th century building designed by Vasari which houses the Uffizi Gallery, a museum that contains the finest collection of art in Italy. With its impressive Italian style Boboli Gardens, the Pitti Palace is the most imposing building in the city and can be accessed by the Ponte Vecchio. Many almost legendary artists and men of letters lived in Florence: for example Dante Alighieri, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti. Many masterpieces of the latter can be admired in the city: for example the Statue of David in the Galleria dellAccademia, the statues in the Basilica of San Lorenzo and the Laurentian Library.
The Florentine cooking includes Tuscan bread, extra-virgin olive oil and meat dishes, the beefsteak Florentine style above all.
