The friendly town of Biella, at the foot of the Biella Alps, offers many significant archaeological, artistic and architectural treasures: the finds preserved in the Museum of Roman architecture, testified by the splendid Romanesque Baptistery, containing frescoes of the XIII century, and by the Bell of Santo Stefano; the medieval village of Piazzo, on a hill, is different from the rest of the town because of the palaces of the XV and XVI century, the arcades and paved streets, along which are the ancient gates that once closed the access to the village. The Renaissance church of San Sebastian (1504) maintains in it good paintings by artists of Piedmont. The cloister of San Sebastian is home to the Museum of the Territory, where remains of a Roman necropolis, ceramics and paintings are exposed.
When visiting the province of Biella you can not help but notice the capillary system of castles (many of them are now private residences) featuring hills and plains. Famous place of worship is the Marian Shrine of Oropa, located a dozen kilometers from the city and a pilgrimage site.
The territory of Biella is renowned for the ancient textile tradition, represented by rich industrial archaeological complex which lies on the banks of the streams from which once took water and energy needed to run factories. Noteworthy are the route of the Strada della Lana linking Biella to Borgosesia, and the Wheel Factory, which owes its name to the big wheel which transmits motion to the machinery.
Among the typical products of Biella we remember the canestrelli cookies, polenta cake, the pan dŽOropa, the torcetti, moreover, the castrato biellese, Biella toma cheese, Seirass, murtarat.
