Its name is connected to the fact that just in this district, Pope Leone X (Giovanni de’ Medici) decided to spend the great part of his days, sleeping in the residence that, built as a “hunting house”, has been enlarged by his successors (Alessandro VI, Giulio II). The residence turns itself in a sumptuous villa subsequently called “Magliana castle” or “Pope castle” because of its fortifications.
A large amount of artists (Bramante, Sangallo, Raffaello) contributed to the realization of the complex.
Leone X lived in “Magliana castle”, between musicians, artists and men of letters. He took delight in the beating of deers and wild boars. As the historician Ranke wrote: “He spent his life in a sort of intellectual intoxication. On the 24th November 1521, the night in which Charles V took Milano, the Pope became gravely ill and died a few days after in the Laterano residence.
