From the remains of an old mine was born a multifunctional cultural space for theatre performances, music evenings, dance shows, concerts, conventions, art performances, great events. Here a decayed area turned into a meeting place with high cultural potential.
The Cava di San Rocco, at the feet of which is the little half-round mine where the theatre is settled, was an open air cultivation for the quarrying of limestone and the production of barren material used for tunnel and underground yard fills dismissed by the mine.
The theatre, which evokes the shape of an old Greek one, was planned to become “part of the mine”.
The terraces on which the audience sits where planned to follow the front until it melts with the stone wall in the contact points.
The setting of the terraces on the right side was chosen to preserve the stone structure in the middle of the mine front, keeping the suggestive view on the old town of Gavorrano, a natural wing.
Here it is possible to enjoy a wonderful sight on the town of Gavorrano and on the underlying green valley. Great attention was paid to preserve every landscape feature of the area, this is the matter why the height of the building is not fully developed, with a worthy harmonic result.
Also the volumes for service rooms, needed for theatre activities, were made invisible, placing them under the terraces or underground.
The theatre has 600 sitting places on the terraces and other 1400 places can be available on occurrence.
